Airy Heaviness

This is my second contribution to the Open Video Contest of the Open Video Alliance. Thankfully it did work out, because this video needed a lot more time and work than expected. But now I am very happy with the achievement, mainly, because this was more or less my first compositing project with “real” 3D and not only with 2.5D of After Effects …

Music: Falling is nothing if you could stand up, by Tymphon

The first time, the idea of doing a compositing project as a contribution to the Open Video Contest came to my mind, I thought, this would be the perfect opportunity to test out some 3D camera tracking tools. So I went out with my camera and started shooting some snowy landscapes, trees and bushes. All out of the hand with some rough movements, to see what a 3D camera tracker is able to do.

But soon I came to the conclusion, that the hard movements wont fit into my main idea of this video: Big, massive and heavy objects, floating easily in the sky. If I had used rough camera movements, they probably had destroyed all of this idea. So again I made use of my dolly and let my camera easily float through some winter landscapes.

To me this project was very reminiscent of some of my prior works, which consists mainly on post production, and were sometimes really frustrating because of insufficient render power and the high limitations of preview possibilities. After days and nights of rendering, you explore a tiny mistake in a composition, and you just want to threw your machine out of the window and then jump behind it, for not detecting the failure before pressing the render button. Anyway, for this project, Christian Türr, a highly gifted 2D/3D expert, illustrated me some very useful tips and hints in 3D programs. So this work was just sometimes a bit frustrating. Thanks Christian!

This 3D project will definitely not be my last one! Looking forward for possibilities to make us of my new acquired knowledge …
